Wallet setup learning path

A structured sequence we use in our Ilford sessions. Follow it on your own or book a session at any step where you want guided help.

  1. Understand wallet types

    Before installing anything, learn the difference between hot wallets (browser extensions, mobile apps) and hardware wallets (physical devices that store keys offline). Most beginners start with a reputable mobile or extension wallet. Hardware wallets suit people holding larger amounts or wanting keys kept off internet-connected devices.

  2. Choose your daily device

    Pick the phone or computer you will actually use for transactions. Wallets work best when tied to a single primary device you control. Avoid setting up on a shared family computer or work laptop unless you understand the access risks.

  3. Install from official sources only

    Download wallet apps from official app stores or the wallet provider's verified website. Bookmark the correct URL. Scam copies of popular wallets appear regularly in search results and app stores — check developer names and review counts carefully.

  4. Create and record your recovery phrase

    During setup, you receive a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase. Write it on paper using a method that prevents transcription errors — we teach a numbered grid approach in our sessions. Never photograph it, store it in cloud notes, or share it with anyone claiming to offer support.

  5. Practise restore before funding

    Delete the wallet app and reinstall it, then restore using only your paper backup. This confirms your phrase is correct. Do this with an empty wallet before sending real funds. Our recovery phrase walkthrough session focuses entirely on this step.

  6. Send a small test transaction

    Transfer a minimal amount to verify receiving works, then send a small amount out. This builds familiarity with addresses, confirmation times, and transaction fees without meaningful financial risk.

  7. Establish daily habits

    Verify URLs before connecting your wallet to any website. Treat unexpected messages about your wallet as suspicious. Keep your recovery phrase in a physically secure location separate from your device. Review your setup annually or after any device change.
